I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
